Bioprocess Optimization for Sustainable Polyurethane Foam Recycling

FOAMBLOOM is an R&D project focused on the valorization of polyurethane foam waste through biotechnological processes, contributing to the development of sustainable solutions for agronomic applications and enzyme production within a circular economy framework.

Within this project, the company’s main objective is to optimize a bioreactor configuration to maximize mass transfer efficiency and significantly reduce process times in the proposed bioprocess. Improved mass transfer is a key factor for enhancing biocatalytic performance, process scalability, and overall productivity, particularly in complex systems involving solid-derived substrates.

Through this R&D project, Biomixing aims to advance bioprocess design and operational strategies, enabling more efficient conversion of recycled polyurethane-based materials into value-added products. By improving bioreactor performance, the project supports the development of robust and scalable biotechnological solutions aligned with sustainability and resource efficiency goals.

This R&D activity reflects the company’s commitment to innovative bioprocess engineering, combining process optimization with environmental responsibility to address industrial and agronomic challenges through biotechnology.

This project is funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation and is carried out thanks to the collaboration with EDIFESA, University of Seville, and several partner companies.
