No two bioprocesses are the same. At Biomixing, we start with a simple but demanding question: what does your culture need to perform optimally, today and at scale?
From there, we design bioreactors and fermenters fully tailored to your process, integrating biotechnology and fluid mechanics from day one. The result: a stable, efficient environment that grows with you.
We handle both greenfield projects and equipment redesigns, focusing on mixing, aeration, oxygen transfer, energy efficiency, and process homogeneity.
While our core expertise lies in the design of agitation and aeration systems, we collaborate with leading bioreactor and fermenter manufacturers to deliver complete solutions when the project requires it.
This allows us to recommend the equipment that best fits your process and to configure a system with “Biomixing Inside”, where the internal design is optimized from day one for your culture, your scale, and your objectives.
BMX-01: High Oxygen-Demand Cultures
Patented design maximizes oxygen transfer (kLa) without increasing energy use or stressing cultures. Benefits:
Effective kLa throughout the working volume
Improved gas distribution and reduced bubble coalescence
Homogeneous environment at industrial scale
BMX-10: Shear-Sensitive Cultures
Low-shear mixing and aeration for fragile cells or products. Benefits:
Stable pH, temperature, and substrate homogeneity
Adequate oxygen transfer without stress
Avoids gradients and dead zones
BMX-100: Fully Customized Designs
For processes that don’t fit standard categories. Tailored solutions address:
Thermal or substrate heterogeneity
High viscosity or non-Newtonian media
Excessive foam or suspended solids
Space constraints or scale-up challenges.
Designs are validated fluid-dynamically and operationally, optimizing scalability and cost.
Whenever we develop a new agitation and aeration system, we conduct parallel experimental tests using the same bioreactor, comparing a conventional agitation system with Biomixing Inside.
The table below shows experimental results from a study carried out using a bioreactor from one of the world’s most prestigious manufacturers, comparing conventional Rushton turbines with the Biomixing Inside system.
The tests were conducted following the DECHEMA protocol, using different air flow rates (vvm) and agitation speeds (rpm), and evaluating the relative improvement in kLa (oxygen transfer) achieved by replacing the conventional system with our patented design.
Key findings:
Improvement in oxygen transfer efficiency (kLa) depends on the aeration-agitation combination.
In regimes where conventional systems reach their limits, Biomixing Inside can increase kLa by over 140%.
Particularly impactful for:
High oxygen-demand cultures limited by mass transfer
Shear-sensitive or highly foaming processes
Industrial scale-up, avoiding energy and stability penalties
Practical impact:
Faster, more stable processes
Wider operating windows without aggressive agitation
Optimized for each bioreactor’s geometry, scale, and constraints
Whether designing a new bioreactor, upgrading an existing one, or evaluating current performance, we ensure your culture reaches its full potential.
